πŸ‘€ Instagram goes vertical.

Instagram’s testing a new grid display, continuing its evolution towards a more vertical-focused platform.

Following user reports of a new, vertically oriented profile grid, Adam Mosseri, Instagram's head, confirmed in a story Q&A this week that the platform is indeed testing this feature.

If your feeds are anything like mine, it seems the majority aren’t happy with the change. But considering the platform’s current content trends, the change (if rolled out officially) would make sense.

Mosseri justified the test by explaining that the majority of content shared on Instagram today is vertical, either in 4:3 or the 9:16 Reel format - adding that β€œcropping it down to a square is pretty brutal”.

And also explained that most content is discovered and consumed outside of individual profiles anyway, whether it be through feeds, recommendations or direct messaging.

Sure, your profile matters (and I for one am a sucker for an aesthetic grid) but how we discover and consume on Instagram is changing - and with it, so must the platform.

It’s unclear at this time whether or not the test will roll out to an official feature, and the square grid will be no more - but it’s one to watch, for sure.

πŸ›οΈ Youtube take on TikTok Shop.

As TikTok Shop continues to gain momentum, YouTube is stepping up its e-commerce game.

By partnering more closely with Shopify, YouTube is offering creators access to thousands of new brands to promote in their videos through their YouTube Shopping’s affiliate program. This expansion aims to compete with TikTok's rapid growth in the U.S. eCommerce market.

To make it easier for creators to find and tag products, YouTube has also introduced a new Chrome extension - allowing creators to save products while browsing online stores, making it quicker to include them in their videos.

And it makes sense. Social commerce revenue is set to reach $6.2 trillion by 2030, and TikTok Shop can’t take every piece of the pie.
