How it started

June 2020 sucked.

Pretty Little Marketer wasn’t born through a magical, entrepreneurial lightbulb moment. It was born through a lonely moment of panic.

Let’s rewind to June 2020. I’d just submitted the final assignment of second year, alone at home on my sofa following the worst 5 months of my degree switching from IRL to virtual in a blink.

What should have felt like a super exciting milestone on my journey into marketing, felt like a dreaded step closer to joining the graduate pool with a pile of unsolved problems and career questions.

So, I took to Google 👩‍đŸ’ģ

“What jobs are there in marketing?”, “What words shouldn’t I use on my CV?”, “What’s the difference between a graduate scheme and entry-level role?”.

Type, enter, read. Type, enter, read.

2 hours later I found myself more overwhelmed and anxious than I’d felt before I started my hunt for answers. I wished for a safe space to learn, be encouraged and feel confident as a curious marketer.

And somehow amongst the worries, I grabbed my phone, whipped open Instagram to set up a sparkly new profile called Pretty Little Marketer.

And I started posting. Nothing groovy - just simple little learnings and teachings I’d picked up from university and my part-time influencer marketing role.

Within 2 weeks we were a community of 1,000, and by December 2020 we were 8,000 strong.

But it was January 2021 that Pretty Little Marketer really kicked up a notch, when I found myself unexpectedly unemployed as a final year student, heading into another lockdown, with bills to pay that my student loan didn’t stretch to cover.

So in a bid to earn a little whilst I finished by degree, and leverage my new social media learnings, I gave freelancing a shot. To help on my hunt for clients, I started a Pretty Little Marketer LinkedIn page as well as set up my own profile, and started repurposing some of our Instagram content over to the new platform.

Figuring it out little by little, I’ve since worked with some of the UK’s biggest brands and found myself fully-booked for 18 months and counting.

I keep telling y’all LinkedIn rocks 👋

Mid-2022, Pretty Little Marketer grew a little more as I realised “hey, this could be a real thing. Not just my baby Instagram pageâ€Ļ”

I strategised our growth, redefining what Pretty Little Marketer is and where I want us to grow and expanded out my offering to 1:1 services, workshops and webinars, running towards my ambitious aim to make PLM *the* community for people in social media, helping marketers survive and thrive in our crazy digital world by making social media simple.

And in December 2022, Pretty Little Marketer became Pretty Little Marketer LIMITED and I switched up from freelancer to director in preparation for some exciting new launches coming this year, 2023 ✨
