AI that helps, not hurts: using AI to build and grow your personal brand

As a creative, AI can be scary. There I said it. Whether it’s feeling guilt for utilising AI or being stubborn about giving it a go - I’ve been there too.

The truth is: it doesn’t have to take away from your work. It doesn’t have to replace YOUR voice (and it shouldn’t) - but it can be a handy tool to streamline those time-consuming bits.

(Chances are, you’ve already used AI without even trying - customer service bots ring a bell? What about Notion AI when you ask for a board recommendation, hehe?)

Especially when you’re balancing a personal brand on top of your day job - whether you work for a brand, run your own, or freelance. Those extra minutes (or hours) in a day mean a lot.

So… Without further ado:

️⚑ See how you can use AI that helps, not hurts.

️⚑ Discover prompts to elevate your personal branding game.

️⚑ And reduce the fear!

Because I once heard, β€œAI will not replace you, but someone who knows how to use AI will” - and that stuck with me.

Let’s set some boundaries!

Before we dive in, let’s decide how much we want to give to AI. Baby steps if you’re cautious or new to it.

Think about your non-negotiables when it comes to AI, like:

βœ–οΈ I won’t let AI write my posts from scratch.

βœ–οΈ I won’t take info from AI without a relevant source.

βœ–οΈ I won’t assume everything it says is correct - it’s still learning.

Then decide what you would use AI for:

βœ… Spelling and grammar checks.

βœ… Finding commonly searched questions around a topic.

βœ… Spotting trends in my own content.

If you’re wary about jumping straight into the deep end, this is a great way to explore AI without losing your voice or authenticity - because at the end of the day, YOU are the heart of your personal brand. Not a robot.

Okay… Where should I start?

AI tools are popping up faster than we can keep up.

If you work in-house, there may already be a tool approved by your company, which might be a good place to start. If not, and before diving into niche tools, get familiar with the big players:

  • Chat GPT.

  • Microsoft Co-Pilot.

  • Google Gemini or AI Mode.

  • Claude.

Not sure which one to try? Ask your creative peers what they’re using - each one serves slightly different needs and audiences.

Prompts should be like a gossip with your friends.

Imagine you haven’t seen your besties in ages - you’re spilling the life updates. Context and ALL !!!

That’s the mindset you want for great prompts.

  • What’s the task?

  • What extra context might help?

  • Even more context – like your goal (awareness, traffic, leads), tone, format, etc.

Here’s an example:

β€œHi, can you check that this post conforms to brand guidelines and hits the desired brief? I’ve attached the guidelines/brief below, along with my draft post. The main goal is awareness for X product/service.”

AI that helps, not hurts your personal brand!

Now that we’ve calmed the AI nerves, here are my favourite ways to actually use it - without losing who you are or your creative edge:

πŸ’« Grammar and spelling checks!

Absolute CLASSIC. Just make sure you clarify you want British spelling (I’ve had one too many z’s instead of s’s).

πŸ’« Does this make sense?

When you’ve reread a sentence 47 times and it stops making sense. Or when you’re asking: β€œDo I need a hyphen?” β€œIs it a or an?”

πŸ’« What questions are people asking online vs social media

Great for shaping content based on what people are searching for and spotting the difference between Google/forum convos vs what’s trending on the feed.

Literally feed the conversations which are happening around you!

πŸ’« Account-specific questions

β€œWhat are my best and worst performing posts?”

β€œWhat are the common themes?”

Basically a mini brand audit into yourself, helping you spark content ideas that resonate.

πŸ’« Comment sentiment analysis (for you or brand competitors)

If you don’t have a fancy sentiment tool (like me), this is a gem. AI can pull out themes, top quotes, and overall sentiment from your comment sections.

Hit the right people, with the right content!

πŸ’« Repurpose content like a pro

Ask for quick ways to turn your top-performing posts into new formats to spark creativity and new content ideas - carousels, blogs, TikToks, threads. Whatever suits.

πŸ’« Make sense of data

Let AI interpret data for you for a quick fix - perfect if you’re a more creative marketer (guilty), or you don’t know where to start with a spreadsheet of data.

πŸ’« Quick social SEO tips

Social SEO is big right now - especially with vertical videos ranking on Google. Use AI for fast keyword ideas or plug into a tool like Semrush.

πŸ’« β€œDid I do what I was asked to do?”

Overthinkers, this one’s for you (and me). Let AI cross-reference your work with the brief - get a transparent check that you did what you was asked to do.

My holy grails:

Now it wouldn't be fair if I brain dumped all this information on you and let you fend for yourself! Here are some of my top resources for all things stripping your personal brand back to see what’s realistic:

⚑ [Tool] ChatGPT (self-explanatory).

⚑ [Blog] HubSpot Blog: 8 ways to use AI in digital marketing.

⚑ [Tool] Semrush: AI powered keyword research tools.

️To cut the story short.

If you've read my entire blog - thanks for staying around! Here's a quick-fire recap:

️⚑ AI doesn’t have to replace creativity. It can take care of the admin, so you can focus on what matters.

⚑Set boundaries and treat it like your bestie - context is key.

⚑ Use it in a way that helps, not hurts. Don't let it replicate YOUR voice. Your audience follows you, for YOU - not a bot.
